Professional career 
Joined Beecham Pharmaceuticals in 1979 as a trainee patent attorney. Moved to the ICI Patent Function at ICI Fibres in 1984. Joined IBM United Kingdom Limited in 1986, became a manager in the IP department in 1990, head of the UK department in 1999, and head of the European IP Law Group in 2003. Retired from IBM in March 2011 and joined the IBM Virtual Law Department. Services to the Institute Currently Immediate Past President. Member of Council from 2010. Member of the Patents Committee 1993 to present, tutor for UK Advanced Papers for several years, examiner for Certificate in Patent Administration 2000 to 2005, contributor to European Patents Handbook for several years, member of Finance and House Committee/Internal Governance Committee 2010 to present and Academic Liaison Committee from its inception. Working with the Design Council on behalf of CIPA to give an IP input into their Spark Programme supporting innovations in the pre-commercialisation stage. Services to the profession outside the Institute Member of EPI Council 1993 to 1999 (substitute member) 1999 to 2010 (full member). EPI EPPC including as secretary 1993 to 1999, EPI OCC (secretary and then chairman) 1999 to 2010. Examiner for Paper D of the EQE from 1989 to 2012, Pre-examination Paper 2012 to 2014. Member of TMPDF Patents Committee 1993 to 1999, and member of Council 1999 to present, President 2008 to 2010 as it changed its name to the IP Federation, VP from 2010. SACEPO industry representative 2001 to 2010. Member of the UK-IPO European Patent Reform Consultation Group. Served as one of the “Experts” for the Hargreaves Review of IP and Growth. Chairman of the UK-IPO Registered Rights Expert Advisory Group advising on the research programme undertaken by the UK-IPO Economics Group.
