Simone Ferrara

Council Member

Qualifications: Chartered Patent Attorney, European Patent Attorney, MSc in Telecommunications Engineering and MS in Electrical Engineering

Professional Career: after working as a research scientist in telecommunications and remote sensing, I started my professional training at RGC Jenkins in 2008. In 2012 I moved to Vodafone where I served as Global IPR Counsel, managed a large portion of a growing global portfolio and advised the business on contractual and strategic matters related to products, services and projects, with particular responsibility for M2M, telematics and automotive.  I am now Director of IP and Legal Affairs at V-Nova, an advanced image and video processing company, where I am responsible for all IP and legal matters.

Services to the Institute: I am currently leading the Education & Professional Standards Committee as Chair of its Steering Committee.  In the past, I represented the Informals on the Education Committee and I was a member of the special Task Force (led by Andrea Brewster) which explored and recommended non-core training options to the profession. Related to the Institute, I have served on the Informals Committee first as Honorary Secretary 2010-2011 and then as Education Secretary.

Other Relevant Information: I speak fluent English and Italian (mother tongue), and I also have sufficient understanding of Spanish and French.  Outside work, I enjoy traveling, cooking, running, and in general any activity that involves exploring and learning.

Election Address: I plan to bring the views of young patent professionals into Council and open a constructive dialogue with them at a time when the profession is undergoing changes due to regulatory inputs and evolving market dynamics. Since students and young professionals are the future of the profession, I believe it is essential to listen to their opinions if we want to shape a profession strong enough to survive present and future challenges.
