Head of Intellectual Property
LifeArc is the new name for MRC Technology, a medical research charity with a 25 year legacy of helping scientists and organisations turn their research into treatments and diagnostics for patients.
We are pioneering new ways to turn great science into greater patient impact and do so by bringing together a network of partners to tackle specific diseases and by directly funding academic and early stage research.
We are seeking a Head of IP to take responsibility for managing, developing and updating strategies and operations for protecting and commercialising the IP of LifeArc’s research functions and of our academic and medical research charity clients. You will have considerable experience of negotiating and drafting the IP terms of the full range of agreements supporting collaborative drug discovery and commercialisation and the strategies required to support all stages of the discovery, development and commercialisation of life sciences therapeutic and diagnostic products. Appreciation of regulatory protections and the regulatory approvals process and its interaction with intellectual property rights is also an important requirement of the job. You will maintain strategic responsibility for managing and de-risking the intellectual property portfolio and carrying out high level due diligence.
You will be responsible for the development of strong working relationships with clients in identifying innovations which have translational potential, and engaging with the Pharma and Biotech industry, to progress these for patient benefit. You will partner with the Executive Director, Technology Transfer and other senior leaders to develop medium to long term aims aligned with LifeArc strategy. You will also work with senior business managers in Technology Transfer to deliver IP management services to a range of medical research charity clients. You will also collaborate with senior managers in LifeArc’s Business Development Division and Centre for Therapeutics Discovery regarding drug discovery projects and oversee the process for putting agreements in place with academic collaborators, identifying, protecting and managing IP issues. You will also work as part of project teams to ensure IP strategy supports partnering with industry. It is essential that you keep your professional practice knowledge up to date, maintain an external focus in this area of work and can advocate externally for LifeArc’s strategy.
You will manage the Technology Transfer Administration team. You will also be responsible for managing the use of the patent / IP and agreement databases by LifeArc teams. You will provide high level training and advisory services on IP protection and commercialisation to both internal and external stakeholders.
You should be a European or US Patent Attorney with several years of high level experience working in the biopharmaceutical industry, or working in private practice with clients in this sector.
