West of England OGM5 February 2010
Bristol
At the Mercure Brigstow Hotel, 5-7 Welsh Back, Bristol BS1 4SP.
Starting at 1.30 pm, registration and buffet lunch from 12.30 pm
The seminar at this year’s West of England meeting focuses on the commercial use of IP, from the strategic view, through the nitty-gritty of licensing to the options for enforcement.
Chris Winter, of New Venture Partners LLC, will look at IP from a venture capitalist’s standpoint - what he looks for in an IP portfolio, how are IP assets used as commercial tools, and how such considerations should influence filing strategy. Chris has been asked to focus particularly on any areas in which he has noticed patent attorneys not recommending the most preferred options, from the venture capitalist’s perspective, which may well open something of a can of worms!
Sean Jauss, of Osborne Clark, will cover the dos & don’ts of licensing/assignment agreement drafting, a kind of masterclass for preparing an agreement and the “must-haves” in terms of what should be included. If delegates indicate when booking any aspects of this topic on which they particularly need information, Sean will endeavour to incorporate them into his talk.
David Barron, of Wragge & Co., LLP, will cover the early options for IP enforcement - cease & desist letters, threats provisions, patent insurance, dispute mediation (e.g. IPO mediation service) etc.
The seminar will be followed by the Ordinary General Meeting, which gives members an opportunity to be brought up to speed with the latest development in the profession and the Institute, and then usual Happy Hour and Dinner.
