    Ben Micklewright, IPO

    Ben Micklewright is a Deputy Director in the Intellectual Property Office’s Policy and Legal Division. He has particular responsibility for domestic legislation and practice for patents, trade marks and registered designs. He also leads on legal work in the IPO’s Transformation programme which is aimed at transforming the IPO’s services. Ben’s career at the IPO has spanned over 20 years, joining initially as a patent examiner working in computing technologies following a PhD in physics. He has had a varied career, working in the IPO’s policy and legal teams and leading a number of patent examination teams, including the team responsible for examining patent applications in the computing field. For some years he was in charge of the recruitment of new patent examiners. Ben is also a patents hearing officer, hearing cases on a variety of legal and substantive matters.

    Jon Markham, Beck Greener

    Jonathan is a partner at Beck Greener in London. He joined Beck Greener in 2009, having previously worked in-house for Dyson. His background is in physics, with a PhD in organic LED displays. Jonathan is a contributing author to the CIPA Black Book, the standard reference text for patent attorneys. He is a regular speaker and presenter.

    Luke Maunder, Bristows

    Luke has advised on a number of first instance actions in the High Court and in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court, as well as on appeals to the Court of Appeal and to the UK Supreme Court. Many of his cases are multi-jurisdictional disputes, requiring a high degree of co-ordination at both a strategic and a practical level. He has also been involved in a wide gamut of interim applications. In particular, he frequently advises on challenges to the jurisdiction of the Courts of England & Wales.

    A significant number of his cases involve disputes over standard essential patents and FRAND terms, and he acted in the lead cases brought by Unwired Planet and by Conversant Wireless Licensing. Otherwise, his cases span a variety of technical fields, including mobile telephony, computing, consumer electronics, lighting, biodiesel production, linear accelerators, paper manufacturing and networking/communications systems.

    Matthew Raynor, Bristows

    Matthew joined Bristows as an associate in 2012. He specialises in intellectual property litigation with a particular interest in patent litigation in the technology sector.

    Matthew has a breadth of experience in handling cases in complex technical areas such as telecommunications, computer hardware and software, virtual reality, inertial navigation, acoustics and electronic lighting. Other significant areas of Matthew’s practice include SEP litigation and FRAND issues, licensing strategy, freedom to operate advice and patent validity analysis. As many of the cases which he works on have an international element to them, Matthew is frequently involved in coordinating litigation before the UK courts with parallel proceedings in Europe, the USA and international patent offices.

    Amanda K. Murphy, Finnegan

    Amanda Murphy, Ph.D., brings over 17 years of experience to her life sciences intellectual property practice. As a U.S. patent attorney practicing in London, Amanda is ideally situated to counsel clients on their global patent strategies. Her practice includes patent application preparation and prosecution, pre-litigation portfolio and due diligence analyses, and contentious PTAB proceedings.

    Amanda focuses on developing patent filing and prosecution strategies tailored to clients’ worldwide business goals. She works with a wide range of clients, including small biotech startup companies, research foundations, and large publicly traded biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

    Darren M. Jiron, Finnegan

    Darren M. Jiron, Finnegan

    With extensive experience in both patent procurement and patent litigation, Darren Jiron focuses on strategic patent portfolio development. He has a special interest in helping high-tech and fast-growing companies craft patent plans to block competitors and build corporate value, working closely with clients to ensure their patents align with and support their business goals.

    In his role as managing partner of Finnegan’s London office, Darren relies on the firm’s full-service intellectual property capabilities across Europe and the United States to build integrated teams of attorneys who address all aspects of clients’ needs. He is an active member of Finnegan’s Israel practice, and he previously served on the firm’s management committee.

    Darren is skilled in defensive and offensive patent portfolio assessment, patent validity and infringement opinions, due diligence, freedom-to-operate studies, patent portfolio management, patent litigation, and patent prosecution. He has devoted more than half of his career to handling contentious IP matters—key experience he relies upon in developing patent strategies. He represents clients in all phases of patent litigation before numerous U.S. district courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). He also leads review proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and has extensive experience in the strategic use of patent reexamination and post-grant review in conjunction with parallel litigation.

    Darren’s technical experience covers a wide range of technology areas, including machine vision, autonomous vehicles, optics, software and sensor-based control systems, user interfaces, medical devices, artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer architecture, consumer electronics, advanced materials, composites, semiconductor design and fabrication, solid-state lighting, batteries, display devices, and green energy technologies. He previously served as a USPTO examiner, and he gained industry experience as a project engineer engaged in research and development of advanced materials systems, composites, controls systems, and electro-mechanical devices.

    Darren is a frequent speaker on patent law. Topics he presents include the importance of strategically developed patent claims; unified EPO-U.S. application drafting techniques; accelerated examination strategies; and subject matter patent eligibility with respect to software and electronics technologies.
