Counsel- Global Technology, Data and Brands
Job Profile Summary
At BP, we’re committed to providing the energy that fuels growth and improves lives but in new ways, with fewer emissions. These are big, complex challenges which new technologies are helping us meet.
The Global Technology, Data and Brands group within BP Legal provides co-ordinated legal support on technology and intellectual property-related matters across all our global businesses. As part of this global function, you’ll be part of the team providing central co-ordination for major Intellectual Asset Management risks.
About the opportunity
You’ll provide commercially focused intellectual asset and intellectual property-related legal advice to technology teams supporting the Applied Chemistry and Physics research team, the Petrochemicals business and the Formulated Products Technology group. As technology platforms develop, you’ll also support newer businesses such as our oil change technology platform and our electric vehicle charging organisation.
We’ll look to you to provide commercially focused advice on technology and intellectual property-related issues and to support strategy development. You’ll identify risks and contribute to their mitigation, and provide specialist training for clients, supporting functions and non-specialist lawyers.
The role will see you interact with a range of individuals including representatives from technology, business and licensing and inventors, IP managers and IP solicitors to execute strategies and acquire rights. You’ll also evaluate external IP rights, manage IP disputes and provide expert guidance.
You’ll either be a solicitor who is qualified to practise in England and Wales or an EPO-qualified Patent Attorney. A degree or equivalent in engineering or science would be ideal.
You will bring us post-qualification experience in patent applications, worldwide portfolios and IP agreements plus their investigation and evaluation. Naturally, you’ll be adept at assimilating complex and ambitious information to identify issues and aid decision making. Commercial awareness and adaptability will be key, as will your ability for understanding client business and technology.
You’ll ideally have managed technology disputes such as patent litigation or overseeing oppositions before the EPO, and worked within a global, multi-disciplinary team.
