Magnus is a leading IP practitioner in the field of petrochemicals and materials chemistry, managing large patent portfolios and frequently representing clients at EPO Opposition and Appeal proceedings. As author/co-author of many peer-reviewed papers, he has a deep understanding of the technology, while maintaining a commercial perspective aided by his time seconded to the in-house team of a multinational US corporation. Magnus has considerable experience handling complex EPO Oppositions and Appeals, and uses practice points from these complex cases to further add value to his clients through his drafting and prosecution practice.

Magnus is a long-standing member of the team at HLK, having joined the firm as a graduate trainee in 2003, and currently leads HLK’s Scottish Operations from their Glasgow office.

Currently Chairman of Technical Board of Appeal 3.2.07 (Mechanics) and deputy Chairman of the Enlarged Board of Appeal; from 1 May 2023: Chairman of the Legal Board of Appeal. German state diplomas in law, master of European laws, and doctorate in European law.

Former German judge at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court (Court of Appeal), legal counsel to the Court’s President and to the Constitutional Court Hamburg. Former press officer and deputy head of the European Parliament Office in Germany.

Author of numerous books and articles on EU law, competition law and patent law; co-editor of Benkard, Europäisches Patentübereinkommen (European Patent Convention), 4th edition, 2023, C.H. Beck München; lecturer and conference speaker on German and EU law, and in particular on patent law.

Simeon is Communications Lead for the One IPO Transformation Programme. He has worked in public sector communications for 15 years, having previously worked in a variety of comms roles at the Office for National Statistics and UK Statistics Authority. Simeon joined the IPO in 2020 and acts as a key link between IPO developers and customers. In his spare time, Simeon is an avid gamer and a Tae Kwon-do instructor.

After spending 10 years as a Research Scientist in Munich and Cambridge, Claudia entered the patent profession in 2008 and held both in-house (for two Cambridge University spinouts) and private practice roles (in London, Cambridge and Edinburgh) before becoming an IP Entrepreneur in 2019. She is the Founder of Innovare IP, a full-service legal practice, and IP Bloks, a LegalTech venture.

Claudia also spent one year working in university research commercialisation in Scotland, engaging directly with the Scottish Microelectronics Centre at the University of Edinburgh.

She is the Chair of CIPA’s IP Commercialisation Committee and Vice-Chair of epi’s IP Awareness Working Group.  She is also a Member of the UKIPO’s IP Finance Advisory Group, CIPA’s Public Affairs Committe  and epi’s IP Commercialisation Committee, as well as a Professional Member of the Economy and Enterprise Committee of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

As Deputy Chief Executive, Neil is responsible for CIPA’s stakeholder management at home and overseas, as well as public affairs, public relations and all external and internal communications. In 2018 Neil won the Memcom award for Outstanding Achiever in a Membership or Marketing Team in recognition of his use of stakeholder engagement to build advocacy and spread CIPA’s key post-Brexit messages globally.

He joined CIPA from the Probation Association, the national membership body for the Probation Trusts of England and Wales. As the Association’s PR and Communications Manager he held the most senior communications position in the probation service outside of Government, briefing politicians and managing national media appearances by senior probation chiefs.

Lee Davies has been the Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) since February 2012. Prior to this, Lee was the Deputy Chief Executive of the Institute for Learning (IfL), the professional body for further education teachers. Lee’s professional background is in engineering (mechanical services) and further education teaching. Lee has experience of the governance of professional bodies, having served as the President of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) in 2011-12.
Lee says that such a varied career, from apprentice plumber to CEO of CIPA, via organisations such as the Highbury College in Portsmouth, the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) and IfL, has left him a little confused about his professional identity. Lee now identifies as an ‘association leader’, although the concept of association leadership is, in Lee’s words, “woefully undervalued and little recognised in the UK”. Lee is a passionate advocate for the association sector and is President and Chair of the Institute of Association Leadership (IAL), where he leads the Chief Executives’ Forum.
