Informals Moot Court 2023

The Informals’ Moot Court is back after a near-decade hiatus. The return of the Moot Court, will be hosted at the CIPA student conference on 27th April 2023 in the afternoon. If you’re already planning on attending, then why not join in? If you’re not planning on attending, you won’t be excluded from the Moot Court, you can turn up just for that.

So what is the Moot Court?

Opposing teams will argue an infringement and validity case based on a past FD4/P6 paper. Participants will have an opportunity to develop skills in presenting oral arguments and will get feedback on infringement and validity analysis from Chris Mercer, and a junior barrister (who will be judging the case).

The moot is a relatively informal event, and it is no problem at all if you have no prior experience of mooting. If you have never looked at a FD4 paper before, then this is a good an opportunity to do so, especially if you are planning on sitting FD4 this year.

Chris Mercer joined the patent profession in 1975 and passed the UK Finals exams in 1979. For the majority of his career, Chris was either a partner or a consultant for Carpmaels & Ransford, with a large practice in oppositions and appeals at the EPO and litigation before the UK courts. Chris is a member of Council for CIPA and is also on a number of CIPA committees, including the Education, Patents and Litigation Committees. He is also on epi’s Council and on various epi Committees and was a founding member of EPLIT. Chris is a former president of both CIPA and epi. He appeared as an advocate in a Moot Court event in 1977.

Joel has been in the profession for 6 years prosecuting, drafting, opposing and appealing decisions on related patents and patent applications at the UKIPO, USPTO, and EPO. Joel also has experience in international portfolio management. Recently, Joel has been consulting for large and international patent firms based in the UK and the US. Joel’s background is in Physics, and he has been working in the field of telecoms, electronics, aerosol generating devices, automotive technology, and software.

This year is Joel’s 5th year on the Informals committee, having previously been the blog editor, yellow sheet editor, and the Honorary Secretary. After last years’ successful return of the Moot Court, Joel is really looking forward to the second competition under his tenure, which is only going to be bigger and better than last years competition.

Tim is currently gaining experience in patent law, registered and unregistered design law, and litigation. As a member of the Marine Sector Group and Defence Sector Group, Tim regularly attends Defence and Marine trade shows and conferences to meet with contacts and clients, and to keep up to date with the latest advancement in the sectors. Tim is also substantially involved in working for one of our large oil and gas clients, contributing to British, European, and French patent applications. Tim graduated from Loughborough University in 2020 with a 2.1 bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Tim completed an industrial placement year with BAE Systems during his degree before returning as a graduate working in design and manufacturing support roles.
