Over the last few years, there has been an explosion of interest in, and availability of, AI tools for the work we do as patent attorneys. The popularity and accessibility of ChatGPT in particular means many of us are considering using generative AI tools to help us, whether that’s to do patent drafting and prosecution work, preparing advice for clients, finding legal or technical information, marketing and article writing, analysing data, and so on.
It is inevitable that AI tools will become everyday tools for patent attorneys as they have many advantages, but it is advisable to perform a risk analysis before using them in the workplace.
In this webinar organised by CIPA’s Computer Technology Committee (CTC), Iain Russell and Helen Wallis will be discussing reasons why AI tools are advantageous and how they may help patent attorneys and paralegals, as well as some potential risks to be aware of, so that you can make an informed decision before using any such tools.

Helen Wallis, CMSHelen Wallis, CMS
Helen Wallis is a partner in the patent team at International Law Firm CMS where she helps clients to protect their technology through patents. The patent filing and prosecution team at CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang, LLP is band 1 ranked in Legal 500. She has an MA in Physics and before training as a patent attorney she worked as a Senior Research Engineer for Nortel Networks developing optoelectronic components, where she was named as inventor on a number of patents. Helen is a European and UK patent attorney and specialises in computer related inventions (both software and hardware) and telecommunications. Helen has extensive experience of patent drafting and prosecution before both the UK IPO and EPO, as well as advising clients on strategic aspects including portfolio management and filing programs. Helen is a member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) computer technology committee and is mentioned in the IAM Patent 1000 CMS entry as being ‘thoughtful, articulate and decisive’.
Iain RussellIain Russell
Iain Russell is one of the leading voices on LinkedIn around the use of AI in IP work. He has hosted, and spoken at, several webinars and events on the topic, including on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Risks and Rewards of using AI in IP work. He recently dedicated an entire day to testing nine different IP tools and has shared extensive insights on that initiative with the wider IP profession. He is the Chair of CIPA’s new AI Committee and is genuinely excited by the opportunities that AI will bring to the IP profession. Iain is an experienced UK and EP patent attorney, who runs Russell IP; a Surrey-based patent practice specialising in helping UK-based companies protect their high-tech (e.g. AI, computer technology, telecoms) and music-tech innovations. He also offers training and support (primarily to in-house patent attorneys) around risks and rewards of adopting AI in IP work.
