As well as being one of the industry’s top mobile and communications technologies experts, Daniel is the driving force behind HLK’s success in Asia. Being a fluent Mandarin speaker and frequent visitor to Asia, Daniel has taken the role of Head of Asia Group and led the firm’s  presence in Asia from strength to strength. It is largely thanks to Daniel’s hard work and strategic thinking that HLK now represents the largest EPO filer in Taiwan and a number of top ten EPO filers in China. Daniel enjoys visiting clients and attending events, as he finds that this is the best way for him to listen to and fully understand each of his client’s needs in order to provide them global strategic IP advice.

On a higher level, Daniel has been involved in joint missions with patent offices in promoting the IP profession and IP protection in Europe through various overseas visits to Asian countries as well as the USA. In the last couple of years, Daniel also led the Asia Group and hosted delegations from the Shanghai Pudong New Area IP Administration in their visits to Germany and the UK. More significantly, Daniel was invited to be the keynote speaker at an Intellectual Property International Forum which was part of China’s First International Import Expo.

Daniel has been an active member of the CIPA Council for the last four years and has been a member of CIPA’s International Liaison Committee, chairing the China Working Group, for a number of years.  A leading European Patent Attorney with nearly 20 years’ experience in private practice, Daniel is also recognised as a future leader of the IP profession in the UK. In January 2022, he was appointed Vice-President of CIPA, and as President with effect from 1 January 2023.

Paula has over 28 years of experience as a corporate/commercial and trademark lawyer. Paula is fluent in both Spanish and French.

Paula is currently serving as President and Chair of the Board of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC). She is also a member of the Board of Directors for the International Trademark Association (INTA) and AIPPI (Canada).

Paula has been certified by the Law Society of Ontario as a Certified Specialist in Intellectual Property Law (Trademarks). She has a significant local practice, where her clients range from start-ups and SMEs, to publicly-traded companies. She has been recognized in The Legal 500 Canada 2023 Leading Individuals list and in Best Lawyers in Canada 2023, as well as receiving the Lexology Client Choice Awards 2024.

In 2008, Paula was awarded the Ottawa Business Journal’s Top Forty Under 40 award. She was also nominated and selected as a finalist for the Businesswoman of the Year Award (2014). She was featured in Distinctive Women Magazine and won the Entrepreneur of the Year Award (2017). She has been ranked for several consecutive years (2011 – 2023) among the world’s leading trademark practitioners by World Trademark Review’s Top 1000 (WTR 1000) publication.

Nathaniel is an intellectual property litigator and strategist, with an emphasis on patent, commercial IP and life sciences regulatory issues. He is also a registered Canadian patent and trademark agent.

Nathaniel has represented numerous companies in a wide variety of industries in patent proceedings across Canada and pro hac vice in the United States. He has successfully argued leading cases on patent eligibility in the life sciences and software fields. He has also litigated trademark, copyright, trade secret and other commercial matters. Nathaniel was lead counsel for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Canada’s only patent litigation involving claims to human genes, representing the hospital pro bono.

Nathaniel has also advocated on behalf of life sciences clients before numerous regulatory agencies in Canada and the United States on intellectual property, regulatory approval, pricing and reimbursement, and antitrust matters. This advocacy involves managing IP issues, removing barriers to health product approval, and law reform efforts.

In addition to his role as advocate, a significant part of Nathaniel’s practice is assisting emerging and high-growth companies with business-critical intellectual property issues, including IP in large acquisitions, strategic IP licensing, IP risk management, and IP structuring in ongoing operations. This work enables Nathaniel to engage with a high throughput of clients and IP issues at the cutting edge in a variety of technological fields.

Nathaniel also has a depth of experience advising on international trade-related intellectual property matters, having served as Chair of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada’s IP Trade Policy Committee during Canada’s negotiation of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement and Trans-Pacific Partnership.

Elizabeth Dipchand is a seasoned advocate and trusted advisor specializing in intellectual property (IP) law. She advises corporations on acquiring, managing, and enforcing intellectual capital, developing long-term strategies that support growth and innovation. With a robust litigation practice, Elizabeth represents clients in industries such as pharmaceuticals, biotech, SaaS, and wireless communications before the Federal Court, Ontario courts, and beyond.

Elizabeth’s solicitor practice encompasses licensing, contracts, and transactional work, helping SMEs and larger corporations leverage their intellectual assets for sustained development. She has extensive experience in pharmaceutical and biotech patent litigation, drug and biologics regulatory law, and proceedings under the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations. Her clients value her ability to coordinate global IP management and enforcement strategies across critical jurisdictions.

Elizabeth serves on the Boards of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), FORA: Network for Change, and the Shaw Festival Theater. She also judges the RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards.
