Patents Committee

The Patents Committee takes the lead for CIPA on issues relating to patent law and practice in the UK, Europe and internationally, except issues which are more appropriate to more specialised CIPA committees, where it will assist as required.

To this end, the committee will:

• Identify issues and monitor developments and proposed developments in patent law and practice, seeking improvements in the law and practice for the benefit of CIPA members and their clients and employers, while taking account of the public interest.
• Monitor, liaise and lobby worldwide with intellectual property offices, governments, government departments, intergovernmental organisations, parliamentary bodies and MPs, including the UK IPO (e.g. via PPWG), the EPO, WIPO, WTO, the European Parliament and European Commission, consulting with CIPA’s International Liaison Committee where appropriate.
• Liaise with other bodies in the UK and abroad having an interest in patent law and practice, including epi, IPFed and academics.
• Review, report and comment as appropriate on procedures, decisions and judgments in the UKIPO, EPO, UK courts (including IPEC), GC and CJEU, and in other jurisdictions internationally.
• Communicate with members on matters within the committee’s remit, cooperating with the Education and Professional Standards Committee to improve education and training on such matters.
