Over 600 candidates successfully passed the first module of the new EQE in March 2025 and will be eligible to enrol in the first ever modules M1 and M2 in March 2026. Ahead of the deadline for enrolment in M1 and M2 on 22 September 2025, we will explore the available details for these new modules and what trainers and trainees should be thinking about (even with the UK exams just around the corner).
M2 tests legal knowledge at a similar level to the old D1 paper and thus for one year only, there will be overlap between the new and old examinations. Candidates for the last paper D and candidates for the first paper M2 will both sit the same paper – D1.
By contrast, M1 is a completely new module testing the practical skills of drafting and defending claims at a level which is suitable for a trainee with two years experience. There is no equivalent in the old EQE and this webinar will provide some valuable insights into this module.
For those who are not aware, the EQE is a joint project between the EPO and epi (the Institute of Professional Representatives before the EPO). Every year, there is a call for new examiners to help with the marking of the EQE and this webinar will also explain the advantages of getting involved in the examining team.

Julia Gwilt is a partner at Appleyard Lees and specialises in software inventions.
She has had a passion for training for over 15 years. As one of the patent attorney members who established the Patent Examination Board (PEB), she oversaw the UK professional examinations for over six years until her term ended in 2020. She is now chair of the epi Profession Education Committee which oversees training and other aspects of the EQE for trainee European patent attorneys. Together with other members of the PEC, she has been heavily involved in the proposal for a new digital EQE.
Liz Elmhirst, EQE Examination BoardLiz Elmhirst, EQE Examination Board
Liz Elmhirst is a European and UK qualified patent attorney with nearly 25 years experience in the profession. She specialises in Life Sciences and has worked in private practice firms, in-house patent counsel at a large pharma company and more recently as VP Intellectual Property at a Biotech start up company based in London.
Liz has been an EQE Examiner since 2010 in Examination Committee ECI (papers A and B) and was involved in drafting a number of EQE papers. In February 2025 she joined the Examination Board and is now Chair of Committee ECII, which is currently responsible for paper C and from next year also the new EQE paper M1.
