The webinar will discuss the Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court from the perspective of a paralegal.  It will cover when opt-outs can be filed, withdrawing an opt-out and the legal considerations around them.  It will also discuss UPC representation, and the different qualifications required. It will also touch on the Unified Patent Court.

Emma Norris, Slingsby Partners LLP

Emma Norris is a paralegal manager working for Slingsby Partners LLP. With extensive experience overseeing patent prosecution from filing to grant, including post-grant opposition work. She leads a term of client-facing paralegals who manage end to end case handling, coordinating filings and submissions across various patent offices, and ensuing continued high level client service.

In her leadership role, she provides legal and procedural guidance to her team as well as mentoring junior colleagues through their professional development. Alongside this, Emma is part of her firm’s senior leadership team, responsible for reviewing and evolving internal procedures in response to legal and system changes. She plays a key role in delivering tailored training and developing automated reporting solutions to ensure high standards of service and operational efficiency.

Emma is an active contributor to the paralegal community and professional development within the IP field. She became part of CIPA’s IP Paralegal Committee earlier this year and is also part of the team organising the paralegal conference each year. Emma is also part of the working group preparing and delivering the CIPA advanced patent paralegal course.

Kathy Lumsden is a Director at Slingsby Partners LLP and is a qualified UK and European Patent Attorney and a European Patent Litigator. Kathy is an authorised UPC representative and files opt-outs on behalf of clients.  Kathy specialises in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in a wide variety of subject areas in the chemical, pharmaceutical and mechanical fields.  She prosecutes patent applications directly before the EPO and UKIPO and manages patent portfolios in multiple jurisdictions.  Kathy uses her experience in contentious matters to further strengthen her drafting and prosecution practice.  She is an experienced advocate, representing clients at oral proceedings at the European Patent Office before the Opposition Division and the Boards of Appeal.
