When Bobby Mukherjee became CIPA President in January 2025, one of his priorities was to counter misconceptions around IP and emotive ‘anti-IP’ arguments at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Bobby said he was concerned by ‘anti-IP initiatives’ (e.g. patent waivers and compulsory licensing initiatives) that have emerged in recent years and feared that IP protecting green technologies could be targeted next.
Bobby and Deputy Chief Executive Neil Lampert have been working with the International Chamber of Commerce UK (ICC UK) and the IP Federation to develop briefing materials and patent case studies to influence key countries and figures at the WTO.
We have published two reports, in partnership with ICC UK and IP Federation: Patents are essential for innovation and growth and Patents as engines of growth. Both feature powerful patenting case studies that have had a significant impact on our target audience at the WTO.
Bobby and Neil have joined two UK trade delegations to the WTO, in Geneva, most recently joining the WTO Public Forum on 17-18 September 2025, talking to ambassadors of key countries to move the dial on IP understanding.
Through its partnerships with organisations such as ICC UK, CIPA continues to expand its global influence – supporting SMEs, building international collaboration, enhancing the stability of the global IP system and ensuring that the UK patent profession’s voice is heard at the highest levels.
