In the first webinar in a series, CIPA’s AI Committee will introduce you to some common terminology that is used when discussing AI tools. The goal is to give you some confidence in understanding these common terms, so that you are better prepared to speak with AI tool providers and make decisions about which tool(s) to test, trial and deploy in your businesses.
No knowledge of AI is required! This webinar is suitable for anyone who wants to get to grips with the key buzzwords and lingo used by AI tool providers, in internal business discussions around AI, and with clients.
This webinar is a pre-cursor to the next webinar in the series, which will arm you with some questions and things to think about before engaging with AI tool providers, as well when you are testing and trialling tools.

Parminder is a patent attorney and Partner at Appleyard Lees. She primarily handles physics-based technologies and computer-implemented inventions (CIIs), and she is well-known for her specialism in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deep tech. Her work in the AI space includes patenting AI and machine learning used for image analysis and object classification, human-computer interactions, text-to-speech systems, 5G networks, and synthetic dataset generation, as well as novel generative AI models, federated learning, and the use of AI to control processes or machines.

Lee-Ann is the Technology & Change Director at Appleyard Lees, where she leads the firm’s IT, data, and change teams. She has over 20 years in the legal sector and has been closely involved in major transformation projects, including moving the firm’s systems to the cloud and supporting the introduction of the Unitary Patent. Lee-Ann is passionate about how technology can make work smarter and improve client experiences, with a particular interest in data, integration, and building a collaborative, forward-thinking culture.
Iain Russell, Russell IPIain Russell, Russell IP
Iain is an experienced patent attorney who runs Russell IP; a Surrey-based patent practice specialising in helping UK-based companies protect their high-tech (e.g. AI, computer technology, telecoms) and music-tech innovations. He is the Chair of CIPA’s new AI Committee and actively tests, uses, and builds his own, AI tools for patent work. He also offers training and support (primarily to in-house patent attorneys) around risks and rewards of adopting AI in IP work.
