Singapore Patent Law: UK Origins, Continuation and Divergence

21May

The modern Singapore Patents Act came into force in the mid-1990s and was substantially derived from the UK Patents Act 1977, with many provisions adopted verbatim.

At the outset, however, Singapore lacked the same depth of experience as more established patent offices, and this shaped the way the regime was initially structured and operated. Since then, both systems have evolved: in some areas they remain aligned; in others, they have diverged.

This session examines that development, focusing on the status of UK authority in Singapore, the areas in which Singapore has developed its own identity, and the practical implications for practitioners.
