Wednesday 29 July
Alex will take you through the most recent updates in EPO case law, starting with the currently pending referrals G 1/25 and G 1/26, the latter of which raises a number of interesting questions, including the suitability of the European Patent Organisation to act as an effective instrument to harmonise the case law of its judicial bodies. Or, to put it another way: how has it taken almost half a century to settle the proper approach to claim interpretation? Time permitting, the session will look at a number of less widely discussed recent decisions that deserve attention.

Alex’s current practice focusses on oral advocacy at the European Patent Office (EPO), where he is highly sought-after in the automotive/power/electronics fields. He is part of a revered team at Dehns having an in-depth knowledge of the opposition and appeal procedure, and has acted as lead advocate for well over a hundred cases before the TBA. Alex is retained for his specialist and expert knowledge in the more complex and high profile cases, such as those involving co-pending litigation.
