Building tomorrow’s IP talent

Finding paralegals who truly understand intellectual property work can be a challenge for specialist practices and IP departments. Generic legal training programmes do not provide the depth of knowledge required to support patent prosecution, trade mark portfolio management or design protection work effectively. As a result, IP teams spend valuable time bridging knowledge gaps when they could be focusing on client service and strategic work.

A specialist solution

Damar Training is pleased to introduce a transformative development in IP paralegal training: it has launched a specialist IP pathway within their paralegal apprenticeship programme, developed in close collaboration with CIPA.

The pathway delivers exactly what IP practices need: paralegals who understand the technical and procedural complexities of IP work, combined with the practical skills to contribute meaningfully to your team’s success.

Comprehensive IP knowledge

The curriculum covers the full spectrum of IP practice. Apprentices gain solid foundations in IP law and practice before progressing through specialised content on patents, designs, trade marks, copyright and enforcement. The delivery model ensures knowledge is absorbed progressively and applied in real workplace contexts.

Learning that works

Damar’s delivery methodology combines multiple learning approaches to maximise effectiveness. Specialist IP workshops led by experienced practitioners bring theory to life with real-world insights. An interactive digital learning platform provides practical exercises and resources that apprentices can access flexibly.

Individual coaching sessions with specialist legal coaches ensure personalised support, while group coaching creates peer learning opportunities where apprentices can share experiences. The programme also incorporates O Shaped resources – professional development materials designed to create more well-rounded, client-led paralegals.

Although the IP pathway is new, Damar has been delivering the level 3 paralegal apprenticeship standard since its introduction ten years ago.

Victoria Matthews, Managing Partner at Cartridges Law said: ‘We have seen a real positive impact on our paralegals who have undertaken the apprenticeship. Completing the training has added real value to their teams and the wider firm.’

Kerry Winstanley, Practice Manager and Senior Associate at Greenhalgh Kerr said: ‘Paralegal apprenticeships give our new legal staff a clear structure for learning and development while complementing the specialist training we provide in-house. Apprentices quickly become valuable members of the team, contributing to productivity and making a real difference whilst developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to progress in their careers. Damar’s approach strikes just the right balance between flexibility and structure, allowing apprentices to manage their studies alongside their day-to-day role while receiving excellent support from their friendly, approachable coaches, who are always happy to provide additional sessions for those who need a bit more guidance. The O-shaped content is a great addition. It encourages apprentices to take ownership of their development and build on the soft skills needed to become well-rounded legal professionals, and we’ve seen many go on to become solicitor apprentices or embark on leadership pathways internally.’

Benefits for your IP team

This pathway delivers measurable value. Government funding and apprenticeship levy support make it a cost-effective talent development solution. Your apprentices gain practical, applicable skills from their first day, reducing the training burden on senior team members. They develop awareness of regulatory requirements and industry standards that are essential in IP practice. And because learning is structured around workplace delivery, it integrates seamlessly with your team’s schedules and workload.

Developing your IP team for the future

The IP sector needs skilled professionals who understand the unique challenges and requirements. This specialist pathway represents a significant step forward in developing that talent pipeline with a structured route to building capability within your organisation.
