Introductory Patent Paralegal Course Application

  • Course Summary

    The CIPA Introductory Patent Paralegal Course (IPPC) is a comprehensive course delivered with a mixture of face to face and online recording sessions. The aims of the qualification are to develop:

    • the knowledge and skills necessary to deal with the filing and prosecution formalities of GB, EP and PCT patent applications;
    • an awareness of design formalities;
    • the ability to review correspondence to identify formalities deadlines and actions required;
    • an understanding of the critical importance of meeting legal requirements and deadlines.

    We recommend that you have at least 6-12 months experience working within patent administration and formalities. The course runs from September through to January with the exams taking place at the end of January (availability permitting).

    The cost of the course depends on which element of the course you are undertaking:

    Course and Exam – £930.00 including VAT

    Exam Only – accessible by those who have completed the course in the previous year – £440.00 (no VAT applied)

    If a candidate has failed an examination at or within 10% of the pass mark, they can sit the next scheduled examination without re-attending the course. If a candidate fails the examination at the second attempt, they will be required to retake the whole course and examination, regardless of the mark gained in the second examination.

    If a candidate has failed an examination by more than 10% below the pass mark, they must retake the whole course and sit that course’s examination.

    Payments can be made by credit or debit card at the time of application or by invoice. Invoices will need to be settled by no later than 26 August 2024. Failing to pay the invoices in time will mean losing your place on the course. If you need any changes to be made to your invoice, please reach out to us at [email protected].

    If you are applying from outside the UK, please reach out to us at [email protected] to discuss VAT exemption.

    Candidates are required to complete their ICPA exam at their firm. If any candidates would like to complete the exam anywhere else, students must contact the Patent Examination Board (PEB) for special permission before the deadline set by the PEB.

    Online applications should be made by the applicant only and require the applicant to agree to the course policies and regulations.
