As part of Black History Month, CIPA and CITMA partnered up to host ‘Celebrating Black Excellence in IP’ on Thursday 2 October, a panel-led event that brought together professionals from across the intellectual property sector.

The panel included, Dr Rachel Daniel (IP21), Ese Akpogheneta (BAT), Gifty Gakpetor (IP Together Limited), and Anita Shaw (Caldwell), with James St.Ville KC (8 New Square) chairing the event.

The panel began by reflecting on their journeys into the IP profession, highlighting challenges such as visibility, self-doubt, and the demands of qualification. Each speaker emphasised the importance of community and the organisations that have made a tangible difference along the way. IP Inclusive, Jonathan’s Voice, IP & ME, CITMA, CIPA, and the British Council were among those recognised – not only for the resources they offer, but for their role in fostering mentorship, community, and allyship across the sector.

James St.Ville KC encouraged attendees to make the most of every opportunity to connect, even if it doesn’t seem immediately relevant. A conversation in passing, a committee meeting, or a casual introduction could lead to unexpected insight, mentorship, or new professional relationships. As he noted, ‘You never know who might know something you don’t’, a valuable reminder that networking is as much about curiosity and openness as it is about strategy.

Another thread running through the discussion was the need to raise awareness of intellectual property beyond its immediate circles. While progress has been made in university outreach, Gifty Gakpetor noted that the profession’s profile has yet to grow in schools. She encouraged attendees to engage with initiatives like Careers in Ideas and to support early awareness, ensuring that IP is recognised not just as a technical discipline, but as a dynamic and accessible career path for future generations.
