IP analytics at the UK IPO: past, present and future

25Jan

The UK government is committed to supporting innovation in the UK and has a target for total R&D investment to reach 2.4% of GDP by 2027. IP rights create an incentive for R&D, which ultimately leads to innovation. Analysis and insights from IP data can therefore help provide a better understanding of how the IP system is being used and where and what innovation is taking place.

The UK IPO has been supporting the UK Government by providing IP analytics to help with evidence-based policymaking for the past 15 years. Using examples from the UKIPO IP analytics team’s work over the years, this webinar will explore how the patent analytics industry has evolved into the modern field of patent knowledge and wider IP intelligence. It will touch on how the tools and techniques have changed, the impact that differing data quality has, and the role of AI in redefining the industry. Patent data is inherently complex and so this webinar will also discuss the importance of data storytelling in providing a structured approach to communicating data insights.
