Event Overview

CIPA is pleased to be hosting the Japan Patent Attorneys Association (JPAA) in London for an in-person seminar during their Spring visit. Delegates from the JPAA will be presenting on recent court cases, updates from the Japan Patent Office and current trends and uses of AI in Japan. The seminar will be followed by a drinks and networking reception at Davy’s Wine Bar, Holborn, generously hosted by JPAA.

  • 14:30-14:55: Recent court case of DWANGO vs FC2, concerning cross-border patent infringement

    Kay Konishi, Director of JPAA International Activity Center (JIAC)

    Kay is a founder and managing partner in KONISHI & NAGAOKA in Tokyo and has been practicing as a Japanese patent attorney over 20 years. Kay had been working as a qualified system engineer at IBM Japan, Ltd. after her graduation from Waseda University. During her term in IBM, she was resident in Italy with an engagement in designing and developing a technical standard of inter-enterprise communication protocol. Kay’s practice primarily focuses on all aspects of patent matters for both domestic/overseas clients in the wireless communication, imaging, AI, optics, and various computer-based and mechanical technologies. Notably, with on-loan experience to the IP law firm founded by former presiding judge at Tokyo High Court, Kay also has successful experiences in numerous patent infringement litigations, inter-partes invalidation trials at the JPO and appeals therefrom at IP High Court as a representative. With her appreciation for practical and cultural differences among jurisdictions, Kay is a frequent speaker on Japanese patent practice and enforcement issues. Kay is also an author of numerous books and articles on various IP issues, which includes “European Patent Practice Guide” (co-author, 2012, Master-Link publishing Inc.), “US Patent Practical Guide” (author, 2021, JIII). Kay is an active member in several associations including AIPPI, FICPI, LESI and APAA.

    Rie Kawai, Ph.D., Member of Europe Visiting Project Group

    Rie Kawai specializes in chemistry. She engaged in research on highly effective chemical synthesis of natural/modified DNA and RNA oligomers and received her doctorate from Nagoya University in 2001. After working as a postdoctoral in U.S. (Wayne State University) and as a researcher at RIKEN and a bio-venture company, she joined Olive International Patent Office in 2010 and was qualified as a Japanese Patent Attorney in 2014. She mainly handles prosecutions of outgoing patent applications and incoming patent applications in chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, life science, material sciences, textile and paper products and also machinery fields. She has been a member of the European intellectual working group of the International Activity Center in JPAA since 2016

    Hidetoshi Kitade, Member of Europe Visiting Project Group

    Hidetoshi Kitade majored in physics in the university and the graduate school. After completing the master degree, he joined a patent attorneys office and was qualified as a Japanese Patent Attorney in 2009 as well as a Japanese Patent Infringement Litigator in 2011. After leaving the patent attorneys office, he entered Aoyama & Partners in 2020. He experienced patent prosecution in various fields such as appliance structure, electronic circuitry, computer software (e.g., apps, image processing), information and communications, and control systems, machine learning (e.g., AI, deep learning). He also experienced patent prosecution in various foreign countries such as, US, EP, CN, KR, TW, IN. He has been a member of the European intellectual working group of the International Activity Center in JPAA since 2016.

  • 16:15-16:40: Trends in AI-related inventions and the use of AI in the intellectual property field in Japan

    Hideyuki Tanaka, Member of Europe Visiting Project Group

    Hideyuki Tanaka measured in Physics in the university and the graduate school. After completing the master degree, he joined Fuji Electric Co., Ltd. in 1983. He engaged in research and development, and he made numerous inventions and filed patent applications for them in the company. After that he engaged in the intellectual property department of the company and was qualified as a Japanese Patent Attorney in 2005 as well as a Japanese Patent Infringement Litigator in 2008. After leaving the company, he funded Tanaka international patent firm in 2020. He experienced patent prosecution in fields such as various devices, semiconductors and computer software. He experienced patent prosecution in various foreign countries such as, US, EP, DE, GB, FR, CN, KR, TW, MY and SG. He has been a member of the European intellectual working group of the International Activity Center in JPAA since 2018. He is also a member of APAA and AIPPI.

    Eisan Go, Delegation Lead of Europe Visiting Project Group

    Eisan Go is a partner of Aoyama & Partners. He has a master’s degree in engineering from Osaka University, focusing primarily on solid-phase syntheses of organic small molecules useful for potential pharmaceuticals. He joined Aoyama & Partners in 2004 and was qualified as a Japanese Patent Attorney in 2009 as well as a Japanese Patent Infringement Litigator in 2011. He has extensive experience on drafting/filing and prosecution of patent applications and patent term extensions in the chemistry-based pharmaceutical fields. He has also represented clients at invalidity proceedings before the JPO and assisted clients with patent litigation before IP courts in multiple countries as well as Japan. He specializes in pharmaceutical patents for clients of domestic and overseas multi-national companies and universities. He has been a member of the European and African working group of JPAA International Activities Center since 2015.

    Ken Nakayama, Member of Europe Visiting Project Group

    Ken is Senior Director of SUGIMURA & Partners. He represents both foreign and Japanese clientsin the procurement and enforcement of intellectual property rights. His practice spans the entire spectrum of trademarks and unfair competition in a wide range of industries. He represents clients before the JPO, the Tokyo District Court, the Intellectual Property High Court, the Japan Intellectual Property Arbitration Center, Japan Customs and WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center for contentious and noncontentious matters, including domain name disputes. Ken earned LL.B. from Rikkyo University and LL.M. with distinction from Tulane University Law School. Ken has been listed in IP Stars, WTR Global Leaders, Chambers Global, WIPR Leader, and Asia IP Experts. Ken is a board member of the Japan Trademark Association. He is also a member of California and New York Bar Associations, ABA, AIPLA, APAA, INTA, FICPI, and AIPPI.
