A refresher on the basics of design law and UK copyright law. We will focus on the practical aspects of filing UK, Community and Hague design applications, and look at the ways flexible ways that copyright can be used by IP practitioners.

Sarah Merrifield, Boult Wade

Sarah is a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney in the Engineering and Designs Group at Boult Wade Tennant LLP.
She deals with patent and design protection in the mechanical engineering field. She has substantial experience in drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications before the UKIPO and the EPO and with the registration of designs at the UKIPO and EUIPO. She has particular experience in dealing with recordal of assignments and other transactions. Sarah works with a broad range of different clients ranging from corporates to SMEs to private clients. She deals with a number of technologies including medical and industrial endoscopy, devices for orthopaedic surgery; healthcare equipment; bearings; construction equipment; oil and gas production; offshore technology; and materials processing and handling.

Khemi Salhan, Gowling WLG

Khemi Salhan is a Senior Associate in Gowling WLG’s award winning Intellectual Property team, specialising in brands and designs disputes.

Khemi is an expert in brand enforcement; managing and co-ordinating enforcement of her clients’ rights across the globe. She recently returned from secondment to the Birmingham Commonwealth Games as Brand Protection Manager. In her role as Brand Protection Manager she was responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive brand registration, protection, exploitation and enforcement programme ahead of delivery of the Games in the summer of 2022.

In addition to global portfolio management and enforcement, Khemi works on a wide range of matters for brands and designs clients including project management, strategic advice and litigation.

Khemi is also an active member of the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (CITMA).
