Bristol Patent Case Law is back will be taking place on the 22 November 2023 at the Mercure Bristol Holland House.

A great opportunity for those who have identified that keeping up to date with the most recent cases across the UK, US, and EPO, is continued competence. Each event will start with a networking lunch, followed by a series of talks and end with a networking drinks reception.

The safety of our members here at CIPA is paramount therefore we have created a COVID-19 Policy for in person events. At all in person events the venues we have carefully chosen will have increased cleaning including sanitizing stations, along with increased ventilation. Lastly, we advise any delegates who are feeling unwell not to attend an in person event. Thank you for your cooperation and on going support.

    Ben Micklewright, IPO

    Ben Micklewright is a Deputy Director in the Intellectual Property Office’s Policy and Legal Division. He has particular responsibility for domestic legislation and practice for patents, trade marks and registered designs. He also leads on legal work in the IPO’s Transformation programme which is aimed at transforming the IPO’s services. Ben’s career at the IPO has spanned over 20 years, joining initially as a patent examiner working in computing technologies following a PhD in physics. He has had a varied career, working in the IPO’s policy and legal teams and leading a number of patent examination teams, including the team responsible for examining patent applications in the computing field. For some years he was in charge of the recruitment of new patent examiners. Ben is also a patents hearing officer, hearing cases on a variety of legal and substantive matters.

    Jon Markham, Beck Greener

    Jonathan is a partner at Beck Greener in London. He joined Beck Greener in 2009, having previously worked in-house for Dyson. His background is in physics, with a PhD in organic LED displays. Jonathan is a contributing author to the CIPA Black Book, the standard reference text for patent attorneys. He is a regular speaker and presenter.

    Luke Maunder, Bristows

    Luke has advised on a number of first instance actions in the High Court and in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court, as well as on appeals to the Court of Appeal and to the UK Supreme Court. Many of his cases are multi-jurisdictional disputes, requiring a high degree of co-ordination at both a strategic and a practical level. He has also been involved in a wide gamut of interim applications. In particular, he frequently advises on challenges to the jurisdiction of the Courts of England & Wales.

    A significant number of his cases involve disputes over standard essential patents and FRAND terms, and he acted in the lead cases brought by Unwired Planet and by Conversant Wireless Licensing. Otherwise, his cases span a variety of technical fields, including mobile telephony, computing, consumer electronics, lighting, biodiesel production, linear accelerators, paper manufacturing and networking/communications systems.

    Matthew Raynor, Bristows

    Matthew joined Bristows as an associate in 2012. He specialises in intellectual property litigation with a particular interest in patent litigation in the technology sector.

    Matthew has a breadth of experience in handling cases in complex technical areas such as telecommunications, computer hardware and software, virtual reality, inertial navigation, acoustics and electronic lighting. Other significant areas of Matthew’s practice include SEP litigation and FRAND issues, licensing strategy, freedom to operate advice and patent validity analysis. As many of the cases which he works on have an international element to them, Matthew is frequently involved in coordinating litigation before the UK courts with parallel proceedings in Europe, the USA and international patent offices.

    Amanda K. Murphy, Finnegan

    Amanda Murphy, Ph.D., brings over 17 years of experience to her life sciences intellectual property practice. As a U.S. patent attorney practicing in London, Amanda is ideally situated to counsel clients on their global patent strategies. Her practice includes patent application preparation and prosecution, pre-litigation portfolio and due diligence analyses, and contentious PTAB proceedings.

    Amanda focuses on developing patent filing and prosecution strategies tailored to clients’ worldwide business goals. She works with a wide range of clients, including small biotech startup companies, research foundations, and large publicly traded biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.

    Yelena Morozova, Finnegan LLP

    Yelena Morozova, Finnegan LLP

    Yelena is an experienced patent attorney with technical expertise across different fields of engineering, most particularly in information technology and software, telecommunications, and AI. Being qualified in the US and in Europe, Yelena practices in both jurisdictions, focusing on patent procurement and portfolio development for a diverse range of global clients. Using her knowledge of the different legal approaches employed on both sides of the Atlantic, Yelena provides a pragmatic advice and develops creative solutions enabling businesses to meet their commercial objectives.

    Yelena currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and is the Board liaison to the AIPLA international committees. She also is an active member of the Women in IP Group of the IP Inclusive Task Force.
