The CRISPR Patents Saga And Latest Updates

By the date of this webinar, it will be just over 13 years since the Science paper of the Nobel Prize winners Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier disclosed for the first time the components of a CRISPR-Cas9 complex. Yet the following saga of competing patent claims relating to CRISPR-Cas gene modification continues. Dr Irvine provided the update on the CRISPR IP saga at the 2024 CIPA Life Science Conference and in the light of the feedback on this has agreed to provide a further update on this topic to a wider audience. It is expected that this will provide much of interest beyond attorneys in the life science field.

Claire Irvine, Becker Greener

From her first days in the patent profession, Claire Irvine (EPA, PhD) has been involved with many of the major innovations in the life sciences’ field. In recent years, this has continued with involvement in the gene-editing field, especially applications of CRISPR-Cas technology, and advising many on navigating the complexities of the CRISPR IP landscape, including both corporate and tech transfer teams. Dr Irvine joined Beck Greener LLP in of counsel role in 2024 after more than 20 years as a patent partner in UK private practice.
