The UNION-IP Autumn Round Table

Design & Copyright Law – siblings or rivals?

Amsterdam (NL) + Online | 11 November 2022

Where does design protection end and where does copyright protection start? Is it halfway, partway or far away. Do they complement or exclude each other ?

The UNION-IP Autumn Round Table focuses on ‘Design & Copyright Law – siblings or rivals?’. The round table aims to look at practical/technical aspects (strategy) and to debate on the legal consequences (validity and scope of protection). A panel of eminent speakers consisting of leading academics and some of our finest practitioners will guide you through this exciting topic. The round table will take half a day and will be conducted in a hybrid format, in person (Koninklijke Industrieele Groote Club in Amsterdam) and online.

What do the Brompton Bicycle, the Ferrari 250 GTO, the Rubik’s Cube and Birkenstock sandals have in common? All are allegedly protected under European copyright law. But does this hold true? And what is the relation with design rights, particularly in view of the recent CJEU’s “Ferrari” decision? This Round Table will revolve around the exciting world of designs and how to protect them in fast-moving times, including the looming metaverse.
