Celebrating the first cohort of the Advanced Patent Paralegal Course

In April, CIPA had the pleasure of celebrating the successful completion of the first cohort of the Advanced Patent Paralegal Course (‘APPC’), marking an important milestone in the continuing development of the patent paralegal profession.

The celebration event recognised the achievements of those who had the confidence to enrol in a brand‑new, advanced qualification and, in particular, those who successfully completed the course. Their commitment reflects a growing appetite within the profession for structured, high‑level professional development tailored specifically to experienced patent paralegals.

The launch of the APPC represents the latest step in a journey that has seen CIPA broaden and strengthen its support for paralegals over recent years. From the initial introduction of paralegal membership, through the review and revamp of existing qualifications, to the delivery of this advanced course, the aim has been clear: to provide meaningful development opportunities that recognise the increasingly complex and specialist role paralegals play within the IP profession.

The APPC builds on that ambition by giving paralegals the chance to deepen their knowledge, grow in confidence and move forward in their patent roles. The standard achieved by the first cohort speaks volumes about both the course content and the calibre of the candidates who took part.

Particular congratulations were extended to the two highest‑scoring candidates, Audrey Gannon and Aysha Khan, who received The Advanced Patent Paralegal Course Award for Outstanding Performance.

Of course, the success of the APPC would not have been possible without the considerable efforts of those involved in its creation, delivery and assessment. Sincere thanks were given to Debbie Slater, Annemarie Parsons, Vicky Maynard and Dóra Máte, whose work behind the scenes brought the course from concept to reality. Thanks were also owed to Emma Norris, Katherine Killick, Hannah Eccles and Lucie Jones as volunteer writers of the teaching materials (and voices behind some of the pre-recorded webinars). Their contribution reflects the collaborative effort required to develop a qualification that is both demanding and genuinely relevant to modern patent practice.

The certificate presentation itself was led by CIPA President Simon Wright, who presented certificates to those able to attend in person. The ceremony provided a welcome opportunity to acknowledge individual achievements while also celebrating the collective success of the cohort as a whole.

The event also highlighted the wider community that supports professional development within the paralegal profession. Thanks were extended to Vicki Salmon for sharing her experiences as a mentor on the course, offering valuable insight into the benefits of mentoring for both candidates and mentors alike.

Reflecting on the progress already made, CIPA CEO Lee Davies also touched on some exciting possible developments for the future of the paralegal profession, signalling that the APPC represents an important step rather than the end of the journey.

With the first cohort now complete, attention turns to the future. The success of this inaugural group provides a strong foundation on which to build, and CIPA looks forward to supporting future cohorts of the Advanced Patent Paralegal Course in the years ahead.
