Shipping is a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 3 percent and burning over 220 million tons of heavy fuel oil annually.

GT Wings, founded by George Thompson, is tackling the problem of marine pollution by harnessing the power of wind.

The company has developed AirWing, a wind propulsion system designed to significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions for commercial ships.

Presented under the ‘Fix our climate’ category in the 2025 Earthshot Prize, AirWing harnesses the shower of wind to provide auxiliary propulsion, cutting fuel use and emissions by up to 30 percent.

AirWing addresses this issue by utilising free, abundant wind energy directly onboard, offering a zero- emission solution that ensures maximum efficiency.

Unlike other sectors that struggle with energy conversion and storage, AirWing delivers direct propulsion at the source, making it an innovative approach to decarbonising global shipping.

One of the standout features of AirWing is its ability to deliver 2.4 times more thrust for the same deck space, making it suitable for vessels with limited space. This integration reduces emissions and has minimal impact on vessel operations. Additionally, AirWing offers financial benefits by lowering fuel costs for vessel owners and aiding compliance with stricter environmental regulations.
