Reducing Nitrous Oxide Emissions in Healthcare

Envirolieve®, developed by Elegant Design and Solutions Ltd. (EDaS) in the UK, is a medical device designed to reduce nitrous oxide emissions during pain relief procedures, particularly in hospitals and maternity wards. Nitrous oxide is a highly potent greenhouse gas, with a warming effect approximately 300 times greater than carbon dioxide. Its use in medical settings contributes significantly to overall emissions, particularly during childbirth.

Invented by Ed Pennington-Ridge, Envirolieve® is designed to reduce nitrous oxide emissions by up to 60–70%without compromising patient care. The device works by delivering standard nitrous oxide/oxygen from a cylinder for the first few breaths, which provides immediate pain relief. After that, the patient’s own exhaled breath, already rich in nitrous oxide, is recycled via a rebreathing circuit, maintaining effective pain relief while using far less gas.

Unlike alternative “cracking” systems, which chemically break down nitrous oxide using expensive metals and high temperatures, Envirolieve® uses a low-tech, mechanical system with no electricity required. This makes it easier to deploy in a wide range of settings, including countries with limited healthcare infrastructure.

The device is compact, can be trolley-mounted, and may reduce the need for transporting large gas cylinders, offering further environmental and cost benefits. By reducing both gas use and emissions, Envirolieve® aligns with global health sector goals for sustainable operations.
