As I reflect on my tenure as President of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, I am filled with pride and accomplishment.
The past year has been marked by significant achievements and progress, driven by the collective efforts of our dedicated members and the support of our exceptional team. Here are some of the highlights and key initiatives that have defined my presidency.
Championing UK Patent Attorneys at the Unified Patent Court
One of the most notable successes has been our campaign to secure the rights of UK patent attorneys to represent clients at the Unified Patent Court (UPC). This effort was crucial in ensuring that our members remain at the forefront of the European patent landscape, despite the UK’s departure from the European Union. We now have approximately 2,000 UK representatives registered to practice at the UPC, the second-highest number in Europe. This achievement underscores the strength and expertise of our members and reinforces the UK’s position as a leader in intellectual property.
Promoting Diversity and Inclusion
Diversity and inclusion have been central themes of my presidency. While we have made significant strides, there is still much work to be done. Our recent membership survey highlighted the need for continued efforts to improve diversity within our profession. We provide numerous opportunities for social mobility and inclusion, but we must remain vigilant in our pursuit of a more equitable and inclusive environment. I know that my successor, Bobby Mukherjee, will continue to prioritise this important work and build on the progress we have made.
Supporting Innovative SMEs
Supporting innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) has been a personal passion of mine. Over the past year, we have worked closely with the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) to launch initiatives such as IP Advance, which provides valuable support to SMEs navigating the complexities of intellectual property. Additionally, we have introduced a new, user-friendly format to the CIPA Clinics to better serve the needs of small businesses. These efforts are crucial in fostering innovation and ensuring that SMEs have the resources they need to thrive. We also launched new video case studies of cleantech SMEs and utilised these videos in a promotional campaign to drive downloads of a patenting starter pack for SMEs (see page 9).
Engaging with the IP Minister
Building strong relationships with key stakeholders has been a priority during my presidency. We have established a positive and productive relationship with our new IP Minister. Our ongoing dialogue has already yielded promising opportunities for collaboration, and I am optimistic about the future of our partnership. By working together, we can continue to shape policies that support innovation and protect intellectual property rights.
Navigating Challenges and Celebrating Successes
The past year has not been without its challenges. The cost of living crisis and inflationary pressures have impacted our financial position, resulting in a small operating deficit. However, through prudent financial management and strategic investments, we have been able to report a modest surplus and increase our cash reserves. This financial stability is essential as we continue to navigate an uncertain economic landscape.
One of the highlights of the year was the CIPA Congress, which brought together a diverse group of UPC judges and practitioners. The event was a resounding success, showcasing the expertise and thought leadership of our members. I am grateful to the entire CIPA team for their hard work and dedication in making this event a standout moment of my presidency.
Looking Ahead
As I prepare to hand over the reins to Bobby, I am filled with confidence in his ability to lead CIPA into the future. Bobby’s extensive experience as an in-house IP lawyer and his commitment to engaging with our industry members will be invaluable as we continue to advance our strategic priorities. I am also pleased to welcome Simon Wright as the newly elected Vice President. Simon’s election is a testament to his dedication and the trust our members have placed in him.
Gratitude and Farewell
I extend my heartfelt thanks to Daniel Chew, our outgoing Immediate Past President, for his tireless work on the international stage and his invaluable contributions over the past three years. I am also deeply grateful to Lee Davies, our Chief Executive, and the entire CIPA team for their unwavering support and wise counsel. Their efforts have been instrumental in achieving the successes of the past year.
In closing, I want to express my gratitude to all CIPA members for their trust and support during my presidency. It has been an honour to serve as CIPA President, and I look forward to continuing to support the Institute in my role as Immediate Past President. Together, we have accomplished much, and I am confident that CIPA will continue to thrive and lead the way in promoting and protecting intellectual property in the UK and beyond.
