Two IPs in a Pod Turns Four!

Two IPs in a Pod is officially four years old! In 2024, we released over 42 episodes of our award-winning podcast, welcoming 59 guests to discuss a wide range of specialist IP topics.

Hosted by Chief Executive Lee Davies and Honorary Secretary Gwilym Roberts, Two IPs in a Pod has built a loyal following in the UK and around the world. By the end of the year, the podcast had nearly 50,000 downloads.

Our most popular episode of the year was the Movember Special (15 November), featuring Graham McCartney, Founder of Jonathan’s Voice, and Richard Wells, Senior Patent Attorney at Tropic. They shared insights into Jonathan’s Voice, a charity dedicated to supporting mental health in the IP sector, and highlighted the vital work of IP Inclusive in promoting equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI), and wellbeing across the UK’s IP professions.

The second most popular episode was What’s in a (Band) Name? with trademark attorneys Chris McLeod, Partner at Elkington and Fife LLP, and Jerry Bridge-Butler, Partner at Baron Warren Redfern. They explored the historical challenges and modern strategies behind band names and trade marks.

Other 2024 highlights included a February episode where Gwilym and Deputy Chief Executive Neil Lampert spoke with Max Walters of Managing IP about patent quality at the EPO, standard essential patents, NatWest’s use of IP as loan collateral, and the impact of AI on patent firms and an episode in August with Lisa Jorgenson, Deputy Director General (Patents and Technology Sector) at the World Intellectual Property Organization, who told us about global initiatives led by WIPO, such as those aimed at supporting developing countries and empowering women and minorities in the IP field. We also ran a series of INTA episodes featuring the CEO of the International Trademark Association and Dana Brown Northcott, Vice President and Associate General Counsel of Amazon’s Intellectual Property team.

Deputy Director General, WIPO

CIPA and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) enjoy a longstanding, positive relationship built on the shared values of promoting innovation and creativity nationally and internationally for the good of all.  At WIPO, our mission is to lead the development of a balanced and effective global intellectual property ecosystem.  Partners like CIPA are integral to that mission.  Our exchanges in 2024 proved rich and varied.  During an official visit to the United Kingdom, WIPO Director General Daren Tang met with CIPA leadership to discuss a host of salient IP issues.  I had the privilege of joining CIPA’s “Two IPs in A Pod” podcast to share, inter alia, experiences and insights on the Patent Cooperation Treaty and its role on the global stage.  WIPO’s Assistant Director-General Andrew Staines conferred with CIPA leadership at its Congress in Edinburgh.  Throughout the year, colleagues at multiple levels met virtually to share ideas, insights, and expertise.  We at WIPO look forward to maintaining and enriching the already strong relationship with CIPA in 2025 and beyond.
